Project Dad-Bike

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Last weekend the dad-bike was stolen! I am now looking at replacements and I’ve decided it may be my chance to build the ultimate in rad two-wheeled dad transport. The image above is a Photoshop mash-up of the kind of gear I need. I don’t expect to tick all the boxes but with your help, I might get close. My requirements are: I need to be able to style-it-out while keeping under the radar of bike villains. I am considering a bike with some form of power assistance for when my legs let me down (a hydrogen system is featured above). I shop, therefore I… need a basket. Let me know your thoughts.

Well, if I were a bike thief, I wouldn’t want to steal that. So you’re off to a good start at least!! :P

How about some sort of fingerprint recognition system on the handle grips which would unlock the brakes, gears and wheels for only those programmed to use the bike. Wouldn’t make the bike completely ‘theft proof’ but would at least slow the thieving scumbags down!

Hmmm. I like the finger print idea. Not sure if I could make it though. I’m really interested to see what bikes/kit is available - what crazy stuff you’ve all seen out there - that I could throw together. I don’t expect to be able to tick all the boxes, just a few.

Well, you want something sturdy, so as not to drop the dwarfs. So four wheels are in order. With kids these days and their rampant happy slapping escapades, you’ll need some kind of protective shell while you move along. You’ll also want it red, as in DANGER! KEEP AWAY! Also going to need to be fast, to get away from those muggers trying to steal your gadgets.
This should do the trick;

… There you go, the new Dad-Bike.

Yea I agree with Jack - that should definitely be your new dad bike!!

Four wheels!? That gives me an idea. There’s a really interesting bike called the Feetz. It comes in four and three-wheeled versions, both of which can carry two kids! It doesn’t look rad on the web - but it’s beautifully engineered, with crazy side suspension (for leaning during turns) and a kooky fold-up option.

Google it and see what you think.

Whilst the Feetz is beautifully engineered as you stated I don’t think it would suit a young hip dad like yourself!?! I could however see my granddad/grandma on it going down the post office to moan about the queues! Priced at over 1300 squid I’m sure you could design a cheaper model………..of course with my ‘patented’ fingerprint recognition system included!

Rear mounted saddle bags. Kids seats.

Saddle bags that have kids seats on them? Saddle bags that house folding kids seats in them?

I think I’m on to something, but it requires more thought.

Doesn’t scream out cutting edge design. I would drop the security aspect and do something more centred around safety? Baby bike air bags? Oh better patent that one!

October 27th, 2008 at 11:37 am

I gotta be honest - I like where L.Rawlins is going - multi-function gear is the way to go - saddle/handlebar bag that flips out a kiddie seat - great idea.

By the way - the hydrogen unit on my mash-up picture is one I’ve actually used!

Simon,

I know what you mean - but bike security is the great unsolved question of our… er… biking times!

Really, we need solutions to make it harder for the scum bags to filch our rides.

A study by the insurance company Direct Line suggested that about 440,000 bikes (compared to 1.7million cars) are being taken by thieves each year.

Finger recognition will be ocassionally flakey as it is with computers and it needs to be something solid and ideally not digital so no conversion to analog - you don’t want to have a bike that you can’t ride instantly and no extra battery concerns (lights are bad enough). Also for an average priced bike to have finger print recognition would be too expensive and too technical for most.

I have a fairly expensive bike and have to say I have had no problems with crime particularly round Cambridge (the bike capital) but them I am careful to use a v.heavy duty lock and use a well lit public area - follow those rules and you will be fine.

I have just has a brain-wave on an idea which I am going to bounce of a biking friend…

How did you get your bike nicked in the first place - was it locked up?

L.Rawlins says:

October 27th, 2008 at 9:22 pm

What do you mean you’ve ‘gotta be honest’ Jason?

Is it uncool to think that my idea has merit?! Haha!

I’m toying with making bit of a collage myself to illustrate the concept furthur along with some other novelties. I’ll email it.

“Really, we need solutions to make it harder for the scum bags to filch our rides.”

How about the police arresting them?!! That would work.

On a more serious note, how about the tech that supermarket trolleys use?

You know when they pass a certain point then the wheels lock to stop it going further?

You could use that and have something you keep on your person to transmit the signal so that when you leave your bike it locks up and can’t be moved.

Or something along those lines anyway.

That ’shopping trolley security’ idea is genius. Some kind of proximity tag attached to your everyday key fob that locked and unlocked the wheels would be really, really neat!

I really like your inventions and ideas. I had the awesome idea of a bluetooth cell phone receiver glove, then I found yours, and my excited state of ideas about patents and creativity was smothered. I salute you, for thinking of my idea before me. But really, your work is really inspiring stuff. I hope to be a designer someday.

Hey Jason!…if your going to have 4 wheels… then why not have 2 sets of forks at the front… I’d reccomend 2 sets of Marzocchi’s 888’s…you’d get attention, but thiefs dont know the different between a skateboard and a bike :).

P.s. liked your recent review of downhill bikes on gadget show…I love riding mine :D

Ok, so I still haven’t had the time to photo the shop out of a regular bike yet but I will get around to it. Promise.

This project has enticed my neurons to firing.

Hi Jason, this is a great idea. I have just come back from a cycle with my two kids (2 + 4), in order to fit the shopping I tow a kids trailer (2 seater - 1 for kids, 1 seat for shopping) and have a child seat for the younger on the back of the bike, Will be interested to see what you come up with as I just don’t feel cool when I’m out on it!!

Jon Clark says:

November 18th, 2008 at 2:14 am

OK, having done some research I would probably use one of these http://www.tricyclesales.co.uk/product%20pages/product_chopper20.html
as the base for the project with the kids sat behind me. Below them should be enough space to fit a motor of some sort, and the handle bars would still be free for a shopping basket.

Stellar feedback,

Lovin’ this discussion - totally adore the Chopper (see Joe Crane’s posts) and as always L.Rawlins’ suggests + loads of others.

Difficult one this - I’m now into a detachable child seating solution - so I can get gnarly then switch it back on for school pick up time.

Proximity Alarm - heck yeah! Electric shock anyone?!

Got a Feetz arriving this week for a few hours test. Really cool guy coming all the way down from up North - will photograph and post.

Something between the Feetz’s practicality and the Chopper’s downright street cool is where I’m at presently. Perhaps movin’ away from the all out mountain bike setup. No conclusions yet though.

Bottom line - I read each and every comment - and I’m flattered by your interest - keep ‘em comin’.

a hummer, coolest car to turn up to school/playschool in, no energy required, and no need for a basket just drive right up to the shop who’ll argue?
Not to mention its indestructable, has wheels too big to clamp and the bad guys wont get far before the fuel runs out

How about a in-built tracking device in the frame, so if it is stolen it can be easily tracked!

Jason, check that out for your bike, TBF, If I stole bikes, and that was on there, no way would I steal it, how could you sell it on. Oh yeah, and if you were the owner, you would be able to supply the codes. For the basket, i have seen a cool design once, its a small basket that fits just between the back wheel and the seat, and its big enough for a school bag i would say, also, no horrible pick nic baskets! For one, they look bad, and they are normally REALLY good at losing kes, key in the pocket, bike moves, key falls out pocket into drain…. sure there is something you can do instead of that. And for a lock, i have thought and a good way would be a triangle lock, both wheels, and just fits over the frame, so the wheels can not move, and unless they want a handle bar and mabey a break, its impossable to steal, i might steal ya pic jason so i can draw on my system, if you do not mind

I’m thinking someway how the bike will know whether its you riding or not, be it fingerprint recognition, or a password etc. If the fingerprint/password is incorrect 3 times the bike could maybe self-destruct?

I’m not an expert on bikes, mainly unicycles but I do think some pedals would help you!!
Some JC Odyssey Twisted Plastics would do the job just fine. Light, stylish and tough!!!

I like your ideas Jason, have you seen ‘The Impello’ by the International Surrey Company, now that is what pedal power should be about!
