The video is here! And it’s going bananas! See our real-world version of The Pit from COD:MW2 in this trailer for my challenge on next week’s ep of The Gadget Show - and make your own minds up how like the game it is. We built the level in three sections, in order to comply with health & safety (real bullets get local councils a little hot under the collar). All I will say, before the full challenge airs, is that ‘Sid’, our anonymous spec forces soldier, cleared the building - front door to jumping and hitting the ground - in 10 seconds. Incredible. I’ve chucked up some stills here. UPDATE: A few commentators have pointed out that the gun used by the spec forces guy in the MW2 challenge wasn’t an H&K MP5, as I stated, but rather a GSG-5 (.22 caliber). I’m actually gutted about this error - obviously, I’m not a gun expert and was only going on what I was told to say about the gun. Referring to Killzone & Gears as FPSers, however, was my bad - I was obviously having a blonde moment!
In what has to be the ultimate homage to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - we built ‘The Pit’ level. It took over a week to build, to the level’s exact specifications. Better still, with me on my Xbox 360 version of the game, I challenged an actual Special Forces Soldier to a race from the start of the level to the end, taking down targets (and avoiding civies!) Live bullets and genuine heart stopping action in my most amazing gaming challenge ever! There’s some footage in the post above or over at five.tv/gadgetshow.
Atomic Swarm is in shops now! To celebrate its arrival, you can come and meet me and the Dot Robots on my book tour - I’ll be posting new venues & dates for signings as they come up but the latest arehere. If, like me, you’ve been waiting for every measly snippet of news about Microsoft’s potentially game changing Xbox 360 add-on, these three words will mean an awful lot to you: ‘I’VE PLAYED NATAL!!!!’ I’ll get straight to the point - while the demo rig I used has already been superseded by advances on the latest gen prototypes, it rocked my world. IT ROCKED MY WORLD, PEOPLE! It’s not bang on - you move a hand rather than a finger with this version of the hardware but there is an exactness to the experience that is missing from those waves of your Wii-mote and a kinetic connection to the action on screen. I played the bouncy ball demo. I now want a full on Kung-fu smack-down and gestural control of my movie collection.
With the right developers, we could be talking about a paradigm shift in our living rooms come release before Christmas 2010 (not actually sure what that means, but it’s late, I’m tired and I’m excited!)
